If Fairfield has a living room, it is Sherman Green. This open stretch of lawn in the heart of downtown is where the town gathers all year, whether for summer concerts under the gazebo, or those easy afternoons when you just want to sit in the shade with a coffee from the Post Road.
The Heart of Downtown
Sherman Green sits right at the corner of Post Road and Reef Road, surrounded by historic churches and steps from downtown Fairfield’s shops and restaurants. It is the kind of central, walkable spot that makes the town center feel like a real gathering place rather than just somewhere to park. Bring a blanket, let the kids run, and you are in the middle of everything.
The Iconic Gazebo
The white gazebo at the center of the Green is a Fairfield landmark. It was built in June 1985 entirely with volunteer labor and donated materials, after a local Parks and Recreation commissioner came home inspired by gazebo concerts he had seen down in Cape May. More than forty years later it is still the stage for the town’s summer music, and one of the most photographed spots in town.
🎶 Summer on the Green
From late May through August, the gazebo hosts three free concert series, each with its own vibe:
- Summer Concert Series: the flagship, with live bands on Thursday and Sunday evenings all season.
- Sweet Sounds of Summer: Saturday nights, with a little something sweet from the sponsors.
- Peanut Butter Jam: Wednesday mornings, made for the littlest music fans.
More Than Music
Even outside concert season, Sherman Green is the easiest place downtown to meet a friend, let the kids stretch their legs, or take a breather between errands on the Post Road. It is the kind of open, central space that makes the center of town feel like a true gathering place.
Honestly, a summer evening on Sherman Green with a little live music is about as good as Fairfield gets. Hope to see you on the Green.
